What happened to Omana Thankamma and Krishna Nair exposes the corruption and cruelty within the guardianship system in Washington State. We demand an immediate federal investigation and justice for this family.
Omana Thankamma, a loving, retired mother, came to the USA in 2013 to visit her son, Krishna Nair, an Indian scientist and successful entrepreneur. After suffering strokes, Omana became quadriplegic but remained conscious and communicated in her native language. Krishna dedicated himself full-time to caring for her at home.
In 2018, a trivial incident was used as a pretext to force an abusive guardianship upon Omana. The judicial guardian, Channa Copeland, allegedly attempted to authorize euthanasia. When the family refused, medical assistance, water, and food were suspended, claiming Omana, as a visitor, had no rights.
Omana was forcibly taken to a homeless shelter. For nearly 5 years, she was kept in solitary confinement, tortured, burned with boiling water, and abused. She became blind in one eye and was left without essential medications for diabetes and pain, ultimately dying due to lack of medical aid.
This case is not just about abuse; it is about exploitation. Krishna Nair suffered a cardiac collapse and PTSD upon being informed of his mother's death. He lost all his assets—over $10 million in properties, businesses, and even his pet dog—stolen by guardians, lawyers, and corrupt courts infiltrated within the Washington judicial system.
The attempt to conduct an independent autopsy was sabotaged when the guardian ordered the secret cremation of Omana's body hours before the scheduled procedure, a clear act of homicide evidence destruction.
What happened to Omana and Krishna is a global warning about the danger that the elderly, the disabled, and immigrants face at the hands of a failed and corrupt judicial system.
We demand that federal authorities act now.
