No One Withdraws

“And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” — (JOHN, 6:68)

1 As the Master revealed new characteristics of His doctrine of love, the followers, then numerous, entered broader circles in the realm of responsibility. Many of them, because of this, fearful of the duty that would fall to them, discreetly withdrew from the welcoming cenacle of Capernaum.

2 Christ, however, conscious of the obligations of divine order, far from violating the principles of freedom, gathered the small assembly that remained and questioned the disciples:
— Do you also wish to withdraw?

3 It was in this circumstance that Peter uttered the wise response, forever engraved in the Christian edifice.

4 Truly, whoever begins the service of higher spirituality with Jesus will never feel identical emotions at a distance from Him. The sublime experience, at times, may be interrupted, but never annihilated. Compelled on several occasions by the demands of the physical realm, the companion of the Gospel will undergo spiritual accidents by submitting to a brief pause; however, he will not definitively lose the path.

5 Whoever effectively communes at the banquet of Christian revelation will never, at any time, forget the loving Master who addressed the invitation.

6 For this reason, Simon Peter asked very fittingly:
— Lord, to whom shall we go?

7 For the world remains full of philosophers, scientists, and reformers of every kind, undoubtedly respectable for the advanced human conceptions of which they are heralds; in most situations, however, they are no more than mere expositors of transient words, with reflections in ephemeral experiences.

8 Christ, however, is the Savior of souls and the Master of hearts, and with Him we find the roadmaps to eternal life.

“Respondeu-lhe Simão Pedro: Senhor, para quem iremos nós? Tu tens as palavras da vida eterna.” — (JOÃO, 6.68)

1 À medida que o Mestre revelava novas características de sua doutrina de amor, os seguidores, então numerosos, penetravam mais vastos círculos no domínio da responsabilidade. Muitos deles, em razão disso, receosos do dever que lhes caberia, afastaram-se, discretos, do cenáculo acolhedor de Cafarnaum.

2 O Cristo, entretanto, consciente das obrigações de ordem divina, longe de violar os princípios da liberdade, reuniu a pequena assembleia que restava e interrogou aos discípulos:
— Também vós quereis retirar-vos?

3 Foi nessa circunstância que Pedro emitiu a resposta sábia, para sempre gravada no edifício cristão.

4 Realmente, quem começa o serviço de espiritualidade superior com Jesus jamais sentirá emoções idênticas, a distância d’Ele. A sublime experiência, por vezes, pode ser interrompida, mas nunca aniquilada. Compelido em várias ocasiões por impositivos da zona física, o companheiro do Evangelho sofrerá acidentes espirituais submetendo-se a ligeiro estacionamento, contudo, não perderá definitivamente o caminho.

5 Quem comunga efetivamente no banquete da revelação cristã, em tempo algum olvidará o Mestre amoroso que lhe endereçou o convite.

6 Por este motivo, Simão Pedro perguntou com muita propriedade:
— Senhor, para quem iremos nós?

7 É que o mundo permanece repleto de filósofos, cientistas e reformadores de toda espécie, sem dúvida respeitáveis pelas concepções humanas avançadas de que se fazem pregoeiros; na maioria das situações, todavia, não passam de meros expositores de palavras transitórias, com reflexos em experiências efêmeras.

8 Cristo, porém, é o Salvador das almas e o Mestre dos corações e, com Ele, encontramos os roteiros da vida eterna.

Senhor!	Lord!
Dá-nos força, mas não permitas que humilhemos os mais fracos.	Give us strength, but do not let us humiliate the weaker ones.
Dá-nos a luz da inteligência, contudo, ensina-nos a socorrer os irmãos que jazem nas sombras.	Give us the light of intelligence, however, teach us to help the brothers who lie in the shadows.
Dá-nos calma, entretanto, não nos deixes viver na condição das águas paradas.	Give us calm, yet do not allow us to live in the condition of still waters.
Dá-nos paciência, todavia, não nos relegues à inércia.	Give us patience, nevertheless, do not relegate us to inertia.
Dá-nos fé, mas não consintas cultivemos a intolerância.	Give us faith, but do not permit us to cultivate intolerance.
Dá-nos coragem, entretanto, livra-nos da temeridade.	Give us courage, however, deliver us from recklessness.
Concede-nos, por fim, o conhecimento da harmonia e da perfeição que nos compete buscar; não nos deixes, porém, tomar a posição da Vênus de Milo, sempre maravilhosamente bela diante do Mundo, mas sem braços para servir a quem quer que seja.	Grant us, finally, the knowledge of harmony and of the perfection we must seek; do not let us, however, take the position of Venus de Milo, always marvelously beautiful before the World, but without arms to serve anyone.
