The profession [ of the lawyers ] can be hard—and it is hard—but it is a profession of extreme nobility. It is the defense of people who are under attack; it is the defense of those who have been wronged. Therefore, it is a profession of immense nobility.
The respect I have is a religious respect for the legal profession.
That is why I have immense respect for those who lead a body of lawyers and know how to respect their fellow human beings.
That is also why I feel sadness when I see that, today, the legal profession is being disrespected.
And to see that a judge—I do not know whether he wants to be fair, I do not know what he wants to be.
Nor does it interest me what he wants to be. What interests me is what he must be.
A judge must be humble. Any person who elevates himself above others, no matter the reason—even because of the exercise of a profession—must be humble. That is the first of the qualities of the human being.
The conscience of none of us makes us anything more than anyone else. Therefore, treating defendants as enemies, persecuting defendants, violating the relationship between a client and a lawyer—this is something profoundly unworthy, in my view.
It shows immaturity, lack of understanding of the judge’s role, lack of understanding of what a judge must be.
Above all, he must be a humane person. A person who respects the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution. Our Constitution is the most beautiful thing there is.
