The Awakening of Consciousness: A Tribute to Dr. Scott Erik Stafne
Introduction
In this space, we often discuss justice through the lens of laws and courts.
Today, however, I share something that touches the very essence of what it means to be a citizen and a human being.
After the publication of Dr. Scott Erik Stafne’s article — “When the Citizen Speaks Before the Lawyer” — in which he reflects on my writings and on the role of moral conscience in the defense of rights, I felt called to give thanks, to reflect, and to invite everyone to unite in defense of Human Rights.
This message is more than a thank-you; it is a testimony that, for justice to be complete, it must be aligned with the will of God and with the courage not to remain silent in the face of oppression.
I faithfully believe that every act of love and justice is like a pebble thrown into a lake: the ripples generated by our faith change the entire surface of reality, reaching places we cannot even imagine.
We are like tiny grains of sand that, together, can tip the scales against the weight of evil.
I have always thought and acted in this way.
It was this conviction that led me, in 2008, to begin the work of MINDD alongside the late Dr. Nicodemo Sposato Neto, a brilliant lawyer and journalist who, like Dr. Scott, helped everyone, without charges.
In 2011, following the tragedy of the “tsunami of stones” in Teresópolis, RJ— when nature testified against urban neglect — the blog became a public voice.
Together, through a pioneering collective effort, we helped secured historic victories in the STJ (Theme 882) and in the STF (Themes 492 and 922), and in many state Courts.
This letter is also an invitation to you, the reader, to raise your voice in defense of your rights, the rights of your neighbor, the rights of all who inhabit this planet, and the rights of future generations.
We know that soon the Earth will cease to be a world of trials and atonement and will become a world of regeneration, where good will prevail.
This letter is more than a thank-you; it is a testimony and an invitation for all of us to collaborate together — because justice, to be complete, must be fair and whole, grounded in the truth of facts, and aligned with the will of God, with love for our neighbor and for nature, with concern for the rights of future generations, and with the courage not to remain silent in the face of oppression.
In this response, I share my conviction that every act of love for our neighbors and true justice is like a pebble thrown into a lake: the ripples generated by our faith and our actions change the entire surface of reality, reaching places we cannot even imagine.
As Queen Elizabeth II’s metaphor teaches, we are grains of sand that, together, can tip the scales against the weight of evil.
In her Christmas message, she said, word for word:
“If you throw a stone into a pool, the ripples go on spreading outwards. A big stone can cause waves, but even the smallest pebble changes the whole pattern of the water. Our daily actions are like those ripples, each one makes a difference, even the smallest.”
We owe this to all those who, in the past and in the present, worked, fought, and suffered so that we could enjoy a better world today as a result of their efforts.
We owe this to ourselves and to our families.
We owe this to God and to future generations.
Dr. Scott Erik Stafne, through his courage, perseverance, faith, and obedience to God — and through his humility and understanding — inspires me, completes me, and gives me strength and courage to keep fighting.
His dedication and self-sacrifice embody the commandments of Our Lord Jesus Christ, echoed in Emmanuel’s words in Our Daily Bread (Pão Nosso), and in Queen Elizabeth II’s message about the “pebble in the lake” and the “grains of sand,” united with the “duty of citizenship,” and with love for God and neighbor, as taught by Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Spiritual Reflection: “What I Have, I Give You”
To ground the value of this union of efforts, we remember Emmanuel’s lesson in the book Our Daily Bread (Pão Nosso) (Chapter 106), commenting on Peter’s gesture in Acts 3:6:
“Almost always, human law addresses the governed in this formula: — ‘What you have belongs to me.’
Christianity, however, declares into the ears of one’s neighbor: — ‘What I have, I give you.’ [...]
Have you ever reflected on the greatness of the world when people decide to give what they have toward the building of universal evolution?
[...] Do not forget Peter’s loving words, and give of yourself, in the effort of salvation.”
The Hummingbird Lesson
To conclude, I remember the old fable of the hummingbird who tried to put out a forest fire carrying water in its beak, drop by drop.
The tiger, seeing that, asked: “Don’t you see how small you are? Do you think you will put out the fire like that?”
And the hummingbird replied: “I am doing my part.”
They say that the gods in heaven, moved by the dedication of that tiny bird, poured abundant rains upon the earth, and the fire was extinguished.
Conclusion
We are smaller than a speck of dust — but we are doing our part, each in our own way, obedient to the will of God, in the certainty that:
“The Lord our God is a Father of love, mercy, and justice.
The Lord is One; He will hear the cry of His people and will have compassion on us, the little sheep of His flock, and will grant us His love, His forgiveness, and His justice — just and in His time.”
To give what one has, in the spiritual sense, is to give the best of oneself: one’s knowledge, one’s time, one’s work, one’s character, one’s patience, one’s hope, and one’s faith.
This is true wealth — of eternal value — which does not corrode, and which, when distributed, multiplies infinitely in the soul of the one who gives and the one who receives.
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL THE WORK OF YOUR HANDS!
Below, I present the full text of my response and gratitude to Dr. Scott, uniting faith, gratitude, and an unshakable commitment to human dignity and judicial integrity.

"If you throw a stone into a pool, the ripples go on spreading outwards. A big stone can cause waves, but even the smallest pebble changes the whole pattern of the water. Our daily actions are like those ripples, each one makes a difference, even the smallest."
Reflexão Espiritual: "O Que Tenho, Isso Te Dou"
A Lição do Beija-Flor
E o beija-flor respondeu: "Estou fazendo a minha parte."

WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER WORLD
“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forevermore.
For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest upon the land allotted to the righteous ...” Psalm 125
Dear Dr. Scott Erik Stafne,
Thank you for your kind words.
I feel deeply honored by your attention, understanding, friendship, example, and support.
I thank you for the trust, for your example of courage, dedication, self-sacrifice, and unshakable faith in the Justice of God — justice with God — and for your uncompromising, constitutional, and juridically perfect defense of our Human Rights, of the Constitutional Legal Order, of judicial integrity, and, consequently, of the individual, inalienable rights to human dignity, life, liberty, equality, privacy, property, peace, and prosperity.
You, through your courage, perseverance, faith, and obedience to God, and through your humility and understanding, inspire me, complete me, and give me strength and courage to keep fighting.
I give thanks in my own name and in the name of all citizens who were, and still are, defenseless victims of violence and of horizontal and vertical violations of their fundamental human rights.
I believe in the supremacy of the will of God, in His goodness and mercy.
I know that all creatures were created by God equal, simple, and ignorant, free and perfectible, being born and reborn, carrying in their spirits the divine seeds of love, charity, and justice, with the eternal laws deposited by God in our hearts.
It is our duty to assist everyone and for each of us to do our part in assisting our neighbor, in protecting the natural rights given by God to each one and to all of His creatures, and in protecting Our Home, this wonderful planet that we call Earth.
May many awaken, be inspired, and act, each one doing their part, with God in their hearts, according to the wise words of the Queen Elizabeth II, in 1975 Christmas message :
"The stone touches the water and creates ripples that spread in concentric circles, reaching far beyond the point of impact.
When many people throw their stones, the entire surface of the lake is changed".
Nothing remains the same.
“The resonance of the waves created by the pebbles thrown into the lake carries meaning far beyond the point of impact.”
I have always believed that every act of love, charity, and justice with God is like throwing a small stone into a lake.
The Queen Elizabeth II also said :
" If enough grains of sand are dropped into one side of a pair of scales, they will in the end tip it against a lump of lead.
We may feel powerless alone, but the joint efforts of individuals can defeat the evils of our time.”
During World War II, in October 1940, when she was only 14 years old, Princess Elizabeth made a historic radio broadcast addressed to the children of the Commonwealth.
That message focused on reassurance and hope, with words such as:
“When peace comes, remember it will be for us, the children of today, to make the world of tomorrow a better and happier place.”
I never heard this before but I have always thought and acted in this way.
This is for all of us.
I have always believed that every act of love, charity, and justice with God spreads outward like the waves formed by a small pebble thrown into a lake.
The universal cosmic consciousness records every act of love and kindness practiced for the benefit of one’s neighbor.
May Our Lord Jesus Christ and all the Spirits of light commanded by Him — protectors of our planet, of nations, of peoples, and of each individual — protect you.
My your words and example inspire many others to unite in the cause of Truth and of Just Justice, which is justice with God.
May God bless you and the work of your hands.
May Our Lord Jesus Christ and all the spirits of light commanded by Him — protectors of our planet, of nations, of peoples, and of each individual — inspire and protect many others to unite in the cause of Truth and of Just Justice, which is justice with God.
Thank you,
With agape, gratitude, and respect
Márcia Almeida

When the Citizen Speaks Before the Lawyer
Jan 12
“The greatest disease is not evil — it is the silence of those who know.” — Márcia Almeida
The Reflection
This morning, I read three writings by Márcia Almeida posted as blogposts on Saturday, January 10, 2026 and Sunday January 11, by MINDD, a non-profit organization focusing on Human Rights issues around the world, with particular focus on Brazil. The following links includes copies to each of MINDD’s articles:
Saturday, January 10, 2026 - “Recieve God’s Blessings-Prayer of the Day”
Sunday, January 11, 2026 - “The Omission of the Good: The Greater Disease in Not Evil. It is the Silence of those Who Know.”
Sunday, January 11, 2026 - “We are not alone: “Rise Up And Speak”, Says the Lord our God.”
As you can see, Marcia’s writings not legal briefs.
They are not academic treatises.
They are not written by a lawyer.
And yet, they speak more clearly about justice, citizenship, and moral responsibility than most all of the court opinions I have read in my 50 plus years of practising law in the courts of the United States.
Márcia writes about moral sleep — the condition of knowing what is wrong and choosing silence.
She writes about the omission of the good — not doing evil, but refusing to resist it.
She writes about the call to raise up and speak, not with hatred, but with courage.
And she wrote a prayer — a prayer of blessing, protection, and alignment.
Together, her words form a single truth:
The greatest danger to justice is not oppression.
It is the silence of those who recognize oppression and do nothing.
I am often told that my words matter because I am a lawyer.
But the truth is simpler and deeper:
Márcia’s words matter because she is a citizen who is awake.
Lawyers are trained to argue.
Judges are trained to decide.
But citizens are the ones who must discern.
And when citizens stop discerning, the law becomes empty.
The Hidden Order of Things
History does not change because lawyers write briefs.
History changes because ordinary people refuse to remain asleep.
The prophets were not judges.
They were not kings.
They were not legislators.
They were witnesses.
Márcia stands in that lineage — not by claiming authority, but by accepting responsibility.
She reminds us that:
Silence is not neutrality.
Silence is participation.
Silence is the quiet consent that allows injustice to dress itself as order.
Why Her Voice Matters
Márcia does not write to dominate.
She writes to awaken.
She does not call for vengeance.
She calls for conscience.
She does not tell us what to think.
She reminds us that we are free — and therefore responsible.
And this is why her words are not less important than mine.
They are more dangerous to injustice.
Because they come from a citizen who has chosen to remain awake.
The Connection to Citizenship
Citizenship is not just a legal status.
Citizenship is a moral posture.
It is the willingness to say:
“I see what is happening, and I will not pretend I do not.”
Márcia’s writing embodies what I call the duty of citizenship:
To discern.
To speak.
To remain aligned with love.
To leave judgment to God.
A Personal Word to Márcia
If Márcia ever reads this, I want her to know:
Your words do not matter because you agree with me.
They matter because you are faithful to what you see.
You do not speak as a lawyer.
You speak as a conscience.
And conscience is older than law.
The Prayer
A Prayer for Moral Awakening
God of truth,
teach us to see without fear,
to speak without hatred,
and to stand without becoming hard.
Deliver us from moral sleep.
Deliver us from comfortable silence.
Deliver us from the illusion that peace is the absence of conflict.
Give us courage to tell the truth,
humility to leave judgment to You,
and love to remain human while doing so.
Bless those who speak without power,
those who write without protection,
and those who choose conscience over comfort.
May we never confuse silence with goodness,
or obedience with righteousness.
In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and by way of the breath of the Holy Spirit, we pray
Amen.
This reflection is written in gratitude for Márcia Almeida — and for every member of humankind who refuses to remain asleep.

Emmanuel
