Dear Mr. Prime Minister:

Something is rotten in Great Britain’s indifference to the plight of political prisoner and Biafran Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

More than five (5) years ago, Mr. Kanu was kidnapped and tortured in Nairobi, Kenya by the Fulani extremist Government of Nigeria. He was subjected to extraordinary rendition to Abuja, Nigeria, and detained in solitary confinement without access to needed medical care in the custody of the security services.

In July 2022, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that Nigeria had violated sixteen (16) International Human Rights Covenants in criminally abducting and detaining Mr. Kanu. The Working Group directed his immediate and unconditional release and payment of reparations—a directive Nigeria has scorned for more than three years.

Last November, Nigeria sentenced Mr. Kanu to life imprisonment following a show trial worthy of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. Mr. Kanu was convicted for defending the right of Biafrans to self-determination by peaceful means--a right enshrined in the American Declaration of Independence and the United Nations Charter but extinguished by British machine guns in 1914 in pursuing its cynical colonial policy of divide and rule in amalgamating separate peoples under one sovereign roof.

The United Kingdom has turned a deaf ear to pleas to intervene to secure Mr. Kanu’s release as simple justice requires. He is a British citizen. He is a political prisoner by any definition. And Britian is partially responsible for Mr. Kanu’s persecution in denying Biafrans a self-determination vote in 1960 when Nigeria obtained its independence and in collaborating with the Nigerian government during the Biafran Civil War, 1967-1970, in a Biafran genocide featuring the industrial scale starvation of countless Biafran babies.

Britain, however, has not lifted a finger to end or alleviate Mr. Kanu’s plight and suffering. Is this callousness explained by bribery, oil interests, or racism? Compare your delight in recently welcoming a British political prisoner in Egypt, Alaa Abd el-Fattah, upon his release and return to the United Kingdom. The conspicuous double standard smacks of George Orwell’s Animal Farm: All British political prisoners are equal, but some are more equal than others.

You would earn human rights glitter by negotiating the release of Nnamdi Kanu with Nigerian authorities. Don’t squander the opportunity to leave footprints in the sands of time.

> 1 Atendei, povo meu, à minha lei; inclinai os ouvidos às palavras da minha boca.

13 Dividiu o mar, e os fez passar por ele; fez com que as águas parassem como num montão.

14 De dia os guiou com uma nuvem, e toda a noite com um clarão de fogo.

15 Fendeu as penhas no deserto, e deu-lhes de beber como de grandes abismos.

16 Fez sair fontes da rocha, e fez correr águas como rios.

17 Contudo ainda prosseguiram em pecar contra ele, provocando o Altíssimo na solidão.

18 Tentaram a Deus nos seus corações, pedindo comida para o seu apetite.

22 Porquanto não creram em Deus, nem confiaram na sua salvação.

23 Contudo mandou às altas nuvens, e abriu as portas dos céus,

24 E chovera sobre eles o maná para comerem, e lhes dera do trigo do céu.

25 Cada um comeu o pão dos anjos; enviou-lhes comida até fartar.

26 Fez soprar o vento do oriente nos céus, e pelo seu poder trouxe o vento do sul.

27 E chovera carne sobre eles como pó, e aves de asas como a areia do mar.

28 E fê-las cair no meio do seu arraial, ao redor de suas habitações.

29 Então comeram e se fartaram bem; pois lhes satisfez o desejo.

30 Não refrearam o seu apetite; ainda lhes estava a comida na boca,

31 Quando a ira de Deus desceu sobre eles, e matou os mais robustos dentre eles, e feriu os jovens escolhidos de Israel.

32 Com tudo isto ainda pecaram, e não deram crédito às suas maravilhas.

33 Pelo que consumiu os seus dias na vaidade, e os seus anos na angústia.

34 Quando os matava, então o buscavam; e voltavam, e de madrugada procuravam a Deus.

35 E se lembravam de que Deus era a sua rocha, e o Deus Altíssimo o seu Redentor.

36 Todavia lisonjeavam-no com a boca, e com a língua lhe mentiam.

37 Porque o seu coração não era reto para com ele, nem foram fiéis à sua aliança.

38 Ele, porém, misericordioso, perdoava a iniquidade, e não os destruía; antes muitas vezes desviou a sua ira, e não despertou todo o seu furor.

39 Porque se lembrava de que eram carne, um vento que passa e não volta.

40 Quantas vezes o provocaram no deserto, e o entristeceram na solidão!

41 Voltaram atrás, e tentaram a Deus; e duvidaram do Santo de Israel.

43 Como operou os seus sinais no Egito, e as suas maravilhas no campo de Zoã;

46 Entregou às lagartas a sua novidade, e o seu trabalho aos gafanhotos.

47 Destruiu as suas vinhas com saraiva, e os seus sicômoros com pedrisco.

48 Também entregou o seu gado à saraiva, e os seus rebanhos aos raios.

49 Enviou-lhes o ardor da sua ira, furor, indignação e angústia, por meio de mensageiros do mal.

50 Preparou um caminho para a sua ira; não poupou as suas almas da morte, antes entregou as suas vidas à peste.

51 E feriu todo primogênito no Egito, as primícias da sua força nas tendas de Cam.

52 Mas fez sair o seu povo como ovelhas, e guiou-os pelo deserto como a um rebanho.

53 E os guiou com segurança, e não temeram; mas o mar cobriu os seus inimigos.

54 E os levou até o termo do seu santuário, até este monte que a sua destra adquiriu.

55 E expulsou as nações diante deles, e por herança lhes repartiu a terra, e fez habitar nas suas tendas as tribos de Israel.

56 Contudo tentaram e provocaram o Deus Altíssimo, e não guardaram os seus testemunhos.

57 Mas tornaram atrás, e portaram-se aleivosamente como seus pais; desviaram-se como arco enganoso.

58 Porque o provocaram à ira com os seus altos, e despertaram o seu zelo com as suas imagens de escultura.

59 Deus ouviu isto, e se indignou; e sobremodo aborreceu a Israel.

60 Pelo que desamparou o tabernáculo de Siló, a tenda que estabelecera entre os homens;

61 E entregou a sua força ao cativeiro, e a sua glória à mão do adversário.

62 E entregou o seu povo à espada, e se enfureceu contra a sua herança.

63 O fogo consumiu os seus jovens, e as suas donzelas não tiveram canto nupcial.

64 Os seus sacerdotes caíram à espada, e as suas viúvas não fizeram lamentação.

65 Então o Senhor despertou como de um sono, como um valente que se alegra com o vinho.

66 E feriu os seus adversários por detrás, e pô-los em perpétua vergonha.

67 Além disto rejeitou a tenda de José, e não elegeu a tribo de Efraim;

68 Antes elegeu a tribo de Judá, o monte Sião, que amava.

69 E edificou o seu santuário como altos palácios, como a terra que fundou para sempre.

70 Também elegeu a Davi, seu servo, e o tirou dos apriscos das ovelhas;

71 De após as ovelhas que amamentavam o trouxe, para apascentar a Jacó, seu povo, e a Israel, sua herança.

72 Assim os apascentou, segundo a integridade do seu coração, e os guiou pela perícia de suas mãos.

Lugar deserto

“E ele lhes disse: Vinde vós aqui, à parte, a um lugar deserto, e repousai um pouco.” — (MARCOS, 6.31)

1 A exortação de Jesus aos companheiros reveste-se de singular importância para os discípulos do Evangelho em todos os tempos.

2 Indispensável se torna aprender o caminho do “lugar à parte” em que o Mestre aguarda os aprendizes para o repouso construtivo em seu amor.

3 No precioso símbolo, temos o santuário íntimo do coração sequioso de luz divina.

4 De modo algum se referia o Senhor tão somente à soledade dos sítios que favorecem a meditação, onde sempre encontramos sugestões vivas da natureza humana. Reportava-se à câmara silenciosa, situada dentro de nós mesmos.

5 Além disso, não podemos esquecer que o Espírito sedento de união divina, desde o momento em que se imerge nas correntes do idealismo superior, passa a sentir-se desajustado, em profundo insulamento no mundo, embora servindo-o, diariamente, consoante os indefectíveis desígnios do Alto.

6 No templo secreto da alma, o Cristo espera por nós, a fim de revigorar-nos as forças exaustas.

7 Os homens iniciaram a procura do “lugar deserto”, recolhendo-se aos mosteiros ou às paisagens agrestes; todavia, o ensinamento do Salvador não se fixa no mundo externo.

8 Prepara-te para servir ao Reino Divino, na cidade ou no campo, em qualquer estação, e não procures descanso impensadamente, convicto de que, muita vez, a imobilidade do corpo é tortura da alma. Antes de tudo, busca descobrir, em ti mesmo, o “lugar à parte” onde repousarás em companhia do Mestre.
